Yesterday I was setting at my computer, and on Facebook I came upon a page for "The DUFF", which I had just seen the night it came out. Some of the comments that were posted were pretty crazy. A few examples include something like the main actress being to old to play a high school student, and another about having seen this kind of movie before with "She's all That".
I agree that we have seen this kind of movie before, examples include " She's all That", "Drive me Crazy", "The Princess Dairies", "The Breakfast Club", "Love Don't Cost a Thing", "Clueless" and even "Pretty Woman". All these movies include someone being made over, in some way. But no one has actually said that there was an actual name for these people. But if you think about it there has been names given, "Basket case" and "Nerd", just to name a few. So I don't really think that the movies I listed are similar to "The DUFF". Their story lines, maybe so. But in the end of "The DUFF" Bianca doesn't really get made over as far as clothes and make up, it's more like she gets a reality check, and starts feeling comfortable with being "The DUFF". So maybe there is something in common with all the movies I listed. Don't all the women or men that get made over end up feeling better about themselves, and more comfortable in their own skin?? Hollywood is always making a new version of older movies, or story lines, so I don't think that's ever going to change.
As far as the actress playing Bianca looking much older than the other actresses. It's true she is older. Bella Thorne who plays the most popular girl in school, who has a bad attitude is only 17-18ish. Mae Whitman who plays Bianca is 26 years old.
I knew the actress was older, because I remembered seeing her in "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", and Bella Thorne was on Disney when this came out. But when I was setting in the theater watching the movie, I didn't pick out her features one by one, and say "OMG she has wrinkles, and she's suppose to be a high school student!". I didn't even notice anything like that. I think comparing her to other girls who have done a similar role, she was awesome.
So is this movie worth seeing? I think it's a cute teen movie. I'm 30, and both me and my husband enjoyed it. If you're tired of this type of story line maybe it's not for you. I personally loved movies like "She's all That" and "Ten Things I Hate About You". They were awesome. Now if you're a parent, and your child is in middle school or younger, this movie does have some perverted things in it. There's a lot of talking about sex, and some bad things happening to a manikin. The movie is funny, but I wouldn't say it's hilarious. Hope this information helps you make your decision about seeing it!
